- di Givlio Cesare Capaccio. In tre libri diuiso. Nel primo, del modo di far l'impresa da qualsiuoglia oggetto, o naturale, o artificioso con nuoue maniere si ragiona. Nel secondo, tvtti ieroglifici, simboli, e cose mistiche in lettere sacre, o profane si scuoprono; e come da quegli cauar si ponno l'imprese. Nel terzo, nel figvrar degli emblemi di molte cose naturali per l'imprese si tratta.
- Books 2-3 have added t.-p.'s. Above all 3 imprints and the colophon appears: Ex Officina Horatij Saluiani. Mortimer notes that Carlino worked at Salviani's press.
- Books 1-2 contain a general discussion of emblems, while book 3 contains emblems in the usual format of motto, ill., epigram in verse, and explanation in prose. Landwehr notes that Capaccio was the first emblem writer to deal mostly with animals and plants, three years before the books by Camerarius.
- Printers' device appears on main t.p. and, in a smaller version, the added t.-p.'s and colophon. 303 woodcut devices, emblems, etc. Head- and tail-pieces, initials.
- Signatures: [paragraph] a-g A-X 2A-3O 4A-P ([paragraph]1v, 2A1v, 4A1v are blank). At the beginning of Book 3, signatures 4A-4F were missigned 3A-3F. In the present copy (as in the Harvard copy described by Mortimer) on leaf 4A2 and the first leaves of signatures 4B-4F (but not on their second leaves), the missing letter has been stamped in by hand.
